This Thursday, Joshua Upson and Robert Brown, our Apprentice Surveyors, had the privilege of gaining exclusive access to the iconic Grade I listed Banqueting House, courtesy of the Surveyors’ Livery Master, David Reynolds. While Banqueting House is famously remembered as the execution site of Charles I in 1649, we’re pleased to report that both Josh and Robert made it out with their heads intact!

The Banquet Hall in Banqueting House, London, is a grand space adorned with magnificent ceiling paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, which have been preserved since 1636.

The visit included a guided tour by Zoe Robert and Christopher Warwick, the Project Team from Historic Royal Palaces (HRP). They showcased the remarkable work undertaken to preserve the building’s rich history and modernize its mechanical and electrical systems. Further enhancements aimed at improving accessibility for visitors were also on display.

A standout moment was a detailed presentation on the JCT Constructing Excellence Contract, the framework HRP uses to deliver projects of this scale. This contract emphasizes collaborative practices, reduces disputes, manages variations efficiently, and ensures that the preservation of the building remains the top priority. This experience provided invaluable insight into the intricate balance of preserving historic significance while introducing modern solutions—a perfect learning opportunity for those aspiring to lead in the surveying profession.

Great work, Josh and Robert!
